Arlan and Linda Kapnick met on a blind date.
"My friend and her friend got us together," Arlan said last week. "We just clicked. We got along all right."
The Kapnick's are still getting along – 70 years later. The couple were married Nov. 5, 1955, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Palmyra.
"We always seemed to get along," Arlan said. "We've had a good life."
Arlan is a Deerfield native while Linda (Davis) was from Dundee. Their first date was to a drive-in movie theater in Adrian.
"We've lived in the area all of our lives," Arlan said.
After he worked several years in a factory, Arlan said he started farming. In their 40s, the couple bought Raisin Valley Golf Club and operated the course for 30 years.
"I'm very proud of what we did there," Arlan said.
Linda was a homemaker most of her life. When the couple bought the golf course, she played numerous roles.
"She helped run that," Arlan said. "She was the mom in charge. She worked with the staff, worked in the kitchen and worked the desk. She was an all-around helper."
After retiring, the two found a mutual passion for traveling. They visited all 50 states and Canada and went on several cruises, from the Panama Canal to Mexico to Alaska. One of their favorite ventures was the east coast in the fall.
"We just played it by ear," he said. "We'd take off in the car. Where ever we decided to go, we'd go. If there was something we wanted to see, we would go see it. We like the color tour, Vermont and New Hampshire. That was very beautiful to see. We did that until we couldn't travel anymore."
They plan on celebrating the occasion with a family gathering. The couple has three children, Brenda (Mike), Keith, and Dave (Michelle), five grandchildren, Danielle, Katelyn, Leigh, Deana and Drew, and three great-grandchildren.
